NEGATIVLAND + Sue-C: Significantly Less Deceptive
Negativland and Sue Slagle, performing as SUE-C, present *Significantly Less Deceptive*, an audiovisual performance combining Negativland’s sound collage and culture-jamming practice with SUE-C’s live, real-time cinema. The Philadelphia Alternative Arts Council presents the event with an opening performance by Mazel.
Since 1980, Negativland’s multimedia work has repurposed sounds, images, objects, text, and other fragments of mass culture. By combining original material with appropriated media, the group explores perception, propaganda, technology, ownership, power, control, and the strange absurdity of mediated reality. Their work spans recordings, video, visual art, books, radio, and live performance, and has led to copyright litigation as well as discussion in college courses, books, and legal journals.
SUE-C is the performance identity of Sue Slagle, an award-winning artist, engineer, and educator. Her immersive real-time cinema performances use live cameras, light pads, video algorithms, and custom technologies to create an organic, improvised interaction between cinema and live performance. Slagle became active in San Francisco’s electronic music community in the late 1990s, founded the experimental label Orthlorng Musork, organized audiovisual events, taught creative coding in Max, and later helped operate Oakland’s Ego Park gallery. She is currently a video designer at Meow Wolf.
Mazel is an experimental performer whose work crosses clown, noise, post-opera, ritual, media, pedagogy, and speculative theology. Their performance *Raptures from the Godhole* received Cannonball’s 2026 Immersive Award and was scheduled to debut at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Their music has been compared with the avant-garde work of Nina Hagen and Björk.
