Tree Watching
Tree Watching is a group exhibition guest curated by Maleke Glee. It explores tree watching as a contemplative practice and considers trees as witnesses, keepers of history, and connections to the spiritual realm. The exhibition reflects on trees as living archives of personal and collective experience, while bringing together artists whose work engages with the natural world, land stewardship, medicinal knowledge, foodways, sociopolitical histories, and the cultures rooted in particular landscapes.
The exhibition features Aziza Gibson Hunter, Niama Safia Sandy, Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz, and Vetiver (Vonne Napper). Their practices connect physical and psychological landscapes, using cultural and aesthetic lineages to consider rootedness, transcendence, personal enlightenment, higher consciousness, and self-actualization. The exhibition also draws on Indigenous ways of relating to one another and to the earth, blurring the distinctions between observer and observed, memory and presence, and rootedness and spiritual transformation.
