Body of Work Night Two: Homeroom by Peter Nicks
Body of Work Night Two presents Peter Nicks’s documentary *Homeroom*, an intimate portrait of Oakland High School seniors navigating an extraordinary and deeply unsettled spring in 2020. The film examines how poverty, displacement, fears of deportation, and encounters with law enforcement shaped the students’ lives before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their final year and the nationwide response to the police killings of George Floyd and others intensified the surrounding trauma. At the same time, the documentary highlights the students’ resilience and their pursuit of empowerment and justice.
Nicks is an award-winning director and cinematographer recognized for immersive, cinema vérité-style nonfiction focused on complex social issues and personal stories. His other feature documentaries include *Anthem*, about composer Kris Bowers’s attempt to create a new American anthem, and *Stephen Curry: Underrated*. He founded Open’hood, a nonprofit media organization dedicated to using storytelling to strengthen community engagement, and co-founded Proximity Media with Ryan Coogler.
