Young Man with a Horn
Young Man with a Horn is a black-and-white 1950 musical drama screening as part of NOIR CITY: Philadelphia 2026. Michael Curtiz directs Kirk Douglas as Rick Martin, a gifted but self-destructive jazz cornetist whose ambition, pride, and drinking jeopardize both his career and his relationships. Doris Day plays the devoted singer whose love for Rick goes unreturned, while Lauren Bacall portrays the elusive woman he desires but cannot understand.
The film receives a richly atmospheric presentation, with jazz solos supplied by musical adviser Harry James and vocal performances by Doris Day. Inspired by Dorothy Baker’s novel about cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, the story also features supporting performances from Hoagy Carmichael, a former associate of Beiderbecke, and Juano Hernández as Rick’s mentor.
