THE IMMIGRANT

THE IMMIGRANT is a 2013 period drama directed by James Gray. The film follows a Polish immigrant whose difficult arrival at Ellis Island, including separation from her sister, leads to coercion and exploitation by a man who draws her into a dangerous new life. Marion Cotillard stars alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner.

The screening is part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s James Gray Director Series, a retrospective celebrating Gray’s more than three decades of New York-set dramas, many influenced by his family history in Queens. The film is presented in English, Polish, and Latin.
