The Jazz Gallery Mentoring Series
The Philadelphia edition of The Jazz Gallery’s ongoing Mentoring Series brings drummer, composer, producer, and educator Marcus Gilmore together with emerging bassist Ryoma Takenaga, with Cuban pianist David Virelles as special guest. Presented by Ars Nova Workshop, the seated performance explores the mentoring relationship between an established jazz artist and a rising musician.
The series grows out of The Jazz Gallery’s Joyce Wein Mentorship Program, which connects aspiring musicians with senior-level jazz artists for guidance in both the music and business of the field. Gilmore is a multi-Grammy Award-winning musician known for expanding rhythmic possibilities while supporting the artists he performs with. His extensive credits include work with Mulatu Astatke, Chick Corea, Pharoah Sanders, Savion Glover, Pat Metheny, Ambrose Akinmusire, Ravi Coltrane, Common, Flying Lotus, Black Thought, and Fred Armisen. Takenaga has recently been heard on Village Vanguard recordings by the Immanuel Wilkins Quartet released through Blue Note. Virelles, a Steinway Artist and Guggenheim Fellow, has performed and recorded with Henry Threadgill, Andrew Cyrille, Paul Motian, Tomasz Stanko, and Ravi Coltrane, in addition to pursuing a range of solo projects.
