Danzas del Ecuador
Danzas del Ecuador is an electrifying concert by Network for New Music centered on the music of Ecuadorian composer Jorge Oviedo. Presented at Teatro Esperanza, the program includes the premiere of *Kawsay*, a five-movement suite commissioned in part by Network for New Music. Named for the Kichwa word meaning “life” or “existence,” the work draws on Ecuadorian and Andean traditions while placing them in a contemporary chamber-music setting.
The concert also features Oviedo’s arrangements of Ecuadorian music from the 19th and 20th centuries, including the genres albazo and san juanito. The program celebrates Ecuador’s musical heritage through cultural exchange and community-focused collaboration and was developed in collaboration with bassist William Valencia.
