Jitney
August Wilson’s *Jitney* takes place in an unlicensed jitney station in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, where Black drivers and community members create their own means of work and survival as redevelopment threatens their livelihoods and legacy. The play follows Jim Becker, the station’s determined owner, whose fragile sense of order is disrupted when his son, Booster, returns after serving time in prison. As hidden family wounds and generational tensions come to the surface, the station’s workers confront questions of dignity, reconciliation, community, and resistance.
Set against the realities of Trenton and other communities where official systems fail to serve everyone, *Jitney* balances humor and hardship while affirming that joy can be an earned act of defiance. The production emphasizes the endurance of relationships and the possibility of healing even in uncertain times.
