The Man I Love
The Man I Love is a 1946 Warner Bros. melodrama that blends film noir, romance, musical numbers, and soap-opera drama. Ida Lupino plays Petey Brown, a tough, glamorous chanteuse navigating atmospheric nightclubs, tenements, and backlot streets in postwar America. Petey can manage everyone else’s troubles, but struggles to resolve her own.
Directed by Raoul Walsh, the film features songs including “Why Was I Born?” and “The Man I Love,” the latter drawn from the Gershwin songbook. Lupino’s singing was dubbed by contralto Peg La Centra, who was married to actor Paul Stewart. The film was Lupino’s third collaboration with Walsh, following They Drive by Night and High Sierra, and its combination of music, romance, and noir reportedly influenced Martin Scorsese’s New York, New York.
