I Thought I Would _______ By Now
Elizabeth Bergeland’s solo exhibition *I Thought I Would _______ By Now* presents paintings that combine figurative realism with surreal and imagined environments. The work explores connection, uncertainty, time, productivity, digital pressure, and the emotional weight of womanhood and motherhood. Recurring imagery, including sunburns, tagged chickens, and reaching hands, becomes a visual language for anxiety, connection, and isolation.
Bergeland is a Philadelphia-based painter born in Wyoming and Colorado in 1983. Her background includes a 2006 BFA in Painting and Anthropology from the University of Colorado. She has exhibited in Philadelphia and beyond, including the 2022 solo show *Quiet Boy*, the 2024 SPRING/BREAK Art Show, and the 2025 exhibition *While You Were Sleeping*. She is also a children’s-book illustrator whose work includes *Being Edie Is Hard Today* and the Kirkus-recognized *The Great Whipplethorp Bug Collection*.
