Oliver Mayman + Jam Session
Oliver Mayman + Jam Session features Philadelphia-based vibraphonist, composer, and educator Oliver Mayman. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mayman approaches the vibraphone as an instrument capable of combining the rhythmic function of drums with the harmonic range of piano. His inventive technique, creative musicianship, and work with four mallets have established him as a distinctive voice on the instrument.
Mayman has led groups throughout the Midwest and East Coast and performed at venues including Cliff Bell’s, the Blue LLama, and Chris’ Jazz Cafe. His credits also include the Detroit Jazz Festival and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. As a sideman and accompanist, he works to make the vibraphone a complete rhythmic and harmonic alternative to piano. He teaches vibraphone through vibesworkshop.com and has developed original approaches to dampening, pianistic concepts, and four-mallet playing. He wrote *Dampening Studies* and presented on vibraphone dampening at a 2023 PASIC clinic.
His honors include winning the jazz category of the 2022 Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition, participating in the 2022 JM Jazz World Orchestra, and winning the 2021 Italy Percussive Arts Society jazz vibraphone competition. He received a bachelor’s degree in music from Temple University in 2023, where he studied with Tony Miceli and Bruce Barth, and endorses Malletech instruments and mallets. The performance is also scheduled to be streamed live on the Chris’ Jazz Cafe YouTube channel.
