Fashion and the Arts of India
Fashion and the Arts of India is a conversation and live draping demonstration focused on the enduring design and cultural significance of the Indian sari. The program will connect contemporary sari fashions with centuries of classic styles represented throughout the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s galleries.
Led by Katherine Anne Paul, the museum’s recently appointed Stella Kramrisch Curator of Indian and Himalayan Art, the event will take place in the Indian Temple Hall, where newly displayed draped and flat saris will be on view. The presentation explores saris made by pleating, tucking, and draping a single six- or nine-yard rectangle of gold or silk fabric.
