Visiting Artist Program: Bony Ramirez
Bony Ramirez, a Dominican-born artist based in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, presents a lecture on his artistic practice as part of Rutgers-Camden’s Visiting Artist Program. Born in 1996 in Tenares, Salcedo, Dominican Republic, Ramirez draws on Caribbean heritage, contemporary Caribbean life, and the lasting psychological effects of European colonialism.
Working across painting and drawing, Ramirez attaches life-size paper figures to painted wood panels to create mixed-media portraits. His bold, sometimes distorted or oversized figures are combined with materials such as wallpaper, swords, and rhinestones, giving his depictions of Caribbean history and daily life both physical and symbolic depth. His work is influenced by Mannerist and Renaissance portraiture, including still-life elements, solid-color backgrounds, and romanticized gore. By placing these European artistic traditions alongside Caribbean objects, scenery, and history, he recontextualizes and reclaims them.
The lecture is part of a series in which nationally and internationally acclaimed visual artists and art collectives discuss their work and professional practices with students and the broader Rutgers University–Camden community. The Fall 2026 series is organized around the theme “Art and Immigration.”
