Hangover Square
Set in Edwardian London, *Hangover Square* is a brooding gaslight noir about George Harvey Bone, a gifted but tormented classical composer whose disturbing auditory episodes inspire both soaring concert music and grisly violence. Linda Darnell plays the seductive singer whose influence fuels Bone’s professional success and murderous impulses, while George Sanders portrays the polished observer who begins to suspect Bone’s dark secret.
John Brahm’s 1945 film features striking cinematography by Joseph LaShelle and a powerful score by Bernard Herrmann, including the climactic “Concerto Macabre.” The film was adapted from Patrick Hamilton’s novel, though the studio altered Bone’s characterization from the book’s blackout alcoholic to emphasize Laird Cregar’s unsettling screen persona. Cregar died at age 31 before the film’s release and never saw what became his first and final leading performance.
