SMOKE
SMOKE is Wayne Wang’s overlooked, multicharacter study of life around a Brooklyn tobacco shop. Harvey Keitel plays Auggie, a tobacconist and neighborhood philosopher whose shop becomes a crossroads for local residents, each exchanging stories, troubles, and personal histories at the counter in return for cigarettes. The film is part of the Philadelphia Film Society’s STRANGE COMPANY limited series, a holiday-season program centered on outsiders, unexpected communities, precarious romances, and guests whose intentions may be less than trustworthy.
