FUGS FILM!
FUGS FILM! makes its Philadelphia premiere at PhilaMOCA with a documentary portrait of The Fugs, the radical 1960s New York band that fused poetry, rock and roll, and folk music. The film explores the group’s influential but often overlooked career alongside that of The Velvet Underground, whose legacy became far more widely celebrated.
Through interviews with Fugs members Ed Sanders and Ken Weaver, along with figures including Aline and R. Crumb, Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group, and Chris Stein of Blondie, the documentary examines the band’s experimental music, anti-authoritarian politics, resistance to censorship, and opposition to the Vietnam War. It also covers the group’s famous 1967 attempt to “levitate” the Pentagon. More broadly, the film presents The Fugs’ story as a call for freedom, democracy, and a willingness to challenge convention.
