Yunchan Lim Plays Rachmaninoff
Yunchan Lim returns to Marian Anderson Hall to perform Rachmaninoff’s famously demanding Third Piano Concerto, the work that helped establish his international reputation and accompanied his historic win as the youngest pianist to receive the Van Cliburn Competition’s Gold Medal. Marin Alsop conducts a program that also explores two powerful works shaped by Russian musical traditions and Philadelphia’s own classical-music history.
The concert opens with Samuel Barber’s intensely dramatic First Symphony, written when Barber was 25 and later premiered in its revised form by The Philadelphia Orchestra. Stravinsky’s Suite from *The Firebird* follows, evoking the magical creature from Russian fairy tales and the legendary Ballets Russes production for which the work was created.
